Wharf to Wharf race in Santa Cruz
Last Sunday (July 27th) I ran the Wharf to Wharf 10k in Santa Cruz.
The weather was perfect. Chilly and foggy. By noon the fog burned off, making it possible for everyone to enjoy summer's most pleasurable pastime...the beach!
The race itself was really fun. 52 bands dotted the 6 mile route and colorful balloon banners marked each mile point.
The only downside was how many runners there were. 15 thousand!!!
Even though I ignored the suggestions of where to line up at the starting line (they wanted you to start with other runners with the same mile pace...6 minute mile, 7, 8, 9, 10...etc. ) I couldn't run at the pace I wanted to because it was just to crowded. At the first turn I even had to stop due to the backup. It was like rush hour traffic! The first half of the race I was pretty stressed out that I would get tripped.
So my time sucked. I made up some of it in the last half. I crossed the finish line at 1 hour 16 seconds.
Would I do it again? Oh yeah. It was fun. You don't do this one for time anyway.
