Lucky to be alive

Last week my nephew was in a terrible car accident.

It was 2am and Jonny was alone in his big cadilac traveling on a curvy road in the rural outskirts of town. He may have been speeding, but he had NOT been drinking.

It only took a moment when he took his eyes off the road to realize he was in trouble. It was a much sharper turn than he planned for when his tires hit the gravel. All he remembers of the horrific crash is thinking..."I don't want to hit those mailboxes." Just after feeling the car spin, his last thought was, "I'm fucked."

His car was not just totaled, it was unrecognizable and shocking. Everyone who saw the car or pictures of what was once a car, couldn't believe that anyone could have survived. Certainly if there had been a passenger, it would have been fatal as a tree branch went right through that seat. The car flipped and rolled and sent Jonny's hat, shoes and car parts in all different directions as far as two blocks away and the top of a neighbor's tree.

The car landed in the bushes of a farmer's yard. The farmer heard the crash and pulled him out. At the hospital they treated him for cuts, bruises and an injured knee- but no broken bones! No surgery! They gave him a vicadin and sent him home. My sister had not heard the phone calls. She didn't even know what happened until the next morning because Jonny had gone straight to bed. (He stays in the guest cottage in the backyard).

When she questioned him about his missing car, he was wrapped in a blanket and couldn't remember that he was in an accident, therefore didn't know where his car was.

Kris had to call the police and hospital to find out the info.

Our family has been blessed with this miracle. I am so happy to still have my wonderful nephew, Jonny (20 yrs old).

Yikes. Let's hear it for seat belts. (I presume he was wearing one; I can't imagine that anyone would survive a crash like that otherwise.) I trust and hope he will slow down now.

(I had jury duty yesterday; we ended up being dismissed early as all the jury trials on the docket settled/pled out. The judge called us all into the courtroom to thank us. When he was done and while waiting for the bailiff to bring me my slip to show my employer, I watched the arraignment of a kid who looked about 18 for drunk driving. He was with an older woman who was probably his mom. I wanted to scream at him, "you idiot! Never mind that you will now have higher insurance and a record: think what pain you could easily have caused your parents." Thing is, until you're a parent you don't look at it that way.)
